Thoughts Along the Way: Elkhorn Slough

Seeing garbage floating in the marsh lands of moss landing breaks my heart. Even one of nature’s greatest gifts and one of the world biggest marine animal nurseries, Elkhorn Slough, is contaminated with plastic water bottles floating in the standing water and plastic bags blowing in the marshes. It’s heartbreaking to see beautiful animals like stilts and egrets to have to hunt around these human-made, plastic obstacles. However, it adds fuel to my fire. After seeing the effects of the changes that have already been made, I have faith in the public that we can change the world to be a safer for  creatures. The ban on plastic bags in California, the rise of popularity of reusable water bottles, and the growing #skipthestraw movement, all lead me to believe that one day soon, Elkhorn Slough will be a plastic free environment. However, that can only be if we show that we care about conservation. And I care. Do you?
